America - The Beautiful!

***

William Burroughs Jr. born on this day in 1947 (D. March 3, 1981). Seen here with Poet Peter Orlovsky in Boulder, Co. - March 1980 (photo by Allen Ginsberg).  His short, sad life produced two must read novels - Speed & Kentucky Ham - plus a handful of uncollected poems and prose known as Prakriti Junction. Every word worth reading.  A writer of rugged, honest beauty.

Memory by Bernadette Mayer

It is July. The month we honor Bernadette Mayer's mammouth, ground-breaking work Memory. In July 1971 Bernadette took one roll of Kodak Ektachrome film every day during the course of the month. She also kept meticulous journals, made field notes & recordings in order to probe what memory was. The end result was an enormous accumulation of data resulting in changes of visual perception, memory and language, it was later presented at Holly Solomon Gallery at 98 Green St in Soho the following Winter, along with an eight hour taped narration by Bernadette. The work forever changed my perception of photography and would go on to influence me as a photographer to this day.  Siglio Press has released a second edition of Memory - the photos are reproduced in colour along with Bernadette's extensive text, it is truly beautiful. Siglio Press will be honoring this great work and Bernadette on July 14th (Bastille Day fittingly enough)! The reading will be held at Familiar Trees 80 Railroad Street in Great Barrington, MA - a locale which figures quite heavily as one of the major  landscapes for the work. (Bernadette and her then partner, filmmaker Ed Bowes, were assisting with the production of Terrence McNally's Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone featuring F. Murray Abraham as part of the Berkshire Theater festival in Stockbridge, MA). Click on link below for all Memory related events and further info:
