Happy Halloween

Back in the late seventies & early eighties WNET Channel 13 NY used to show Nosferatu on Halloween. A classic horror film from 1922 starring Max Schreck. Directed by F.W. Murnau,  it is a silent German Expressionist film that, to this day, remains one of the scariest things you'll ever see. I was wholly disappointed in the latest remake...so under-exposed you could barely see details, though it had its charm - namely the landscapes. In 1977 Blue Oyster Cult released this song on their Spectres album, with lyrics by artist/poet Helen Wheels (Helen Robins).  I've always enjoyed it.

Father

My father... who had to start over from zero many times. Who taught me how to embrace my independent nature. Who, as part of a two parent household, taught me basic human decency. Who I saw jump from our parked car to pick up an older woman who had tripped and fallen on a sidewalk, when I was five.  Who didn't fall for career politicians.  Who did it his way. Who didn't flinch. Who kept his course. Who spoke to God directly. Who was proud of my rugged individualism. Who knew collectivism, a weak mind and following were contemptible. He who remained a true believer in all personal freedoms and ways of being. Authentic, real, no bullshit - that was my father. Loving and gentle, who sacrificed everything he had to get me to National Jewish Hospital in Denver, Colorado ( age 11) so I would heal, tackle my asthma and live a normal life - despite the heartbreak we all felt at our separation. Who re-married the woman who'd actually become my real mother. My father, who'd now spit on Legacy Media and the Left seeing right through their deception, lies and lack of morality. My father who'd have liked Charlie Kirk - for his bravery, his common sense and his ability to communicate, but most of all his embracing of God, Country & Freedom. My father who didn't see sixty, who never made it to New Hampshire to retire - I salute you, I thank you and I will always love you & be grateful to you!

The handle of my hiking staff. Carlos Castaneda says it's always an arm's length away. Maybe so, it reminds me of the precious moment, impermanence and not to take it all too seriously. Plus,  the skull against the brass mala counters makes enough noise to keep the bears away.
