Fritz Koenig's The Sphere/ WTC Plaza - the world's largest bronze sculpture of the time, weighing in at 20 tons. Installed in 1972, It survived the terrorist attacks of 9/11 - dented, damaged.

The artist Rosemary Mayer, who lived at 55 Leonard St., (Tribeca) NYC (not far from Ground Zero), once told me of a possible exhibition that was discussed among the first artists to inhabit Soho and Tribeca sometime in 1972.  It was to be about how Lower Manhattan would be impacted if The Twin Towers "fell." Would they fall North, South, East, or West? What area(s) would be hardest hit? What would the loss of life and business be? How long would a clean up take and who would do it? 

They imploded, they went downward. Clean up took a year plus and it was done by NYPD (incl. K9 units), NYFD, countless volunteers and cadaver dogs.

I went to the top once, in the late 1980s. I was with my friends, artists Kevin Farrell and Charles Imbro. And their girlfriends. I was the odd man out. I'm not sure what possessed us to go up there. It was a grey Sunday afternoon, the WTC and Lower Manhattan were pretty much deserted. What a view. You could see for miles in all directions, the curve of a horizon seemingly endless. Afterwards we all ate at a tiny cafe on the corner of West Fourth Street and Bleecker. It was BYOB. Charles and I went to a Deli around the corner and brought a couple six packs of beer.
